On the road to Stonington and then to Castine for a night kayak to see bio-luminscence.
In the lovely town of Castine Maine, Castine Kayak has some wonderful kayaking adventures and classes. One of them caught my fascination after reading a Bangor Daily news article by Jeff Strout.
Billed as kayaking with the stars..they take you out in the Castine harbor where the bio- luminescent critters are thick.
We arrived on a foggy night and were uncertain whether or not we would be able to go or to see anything. While sitting at Dennett's Wharf waiting for our guide , we had a delightful conversation with a gentleman from Santa Fe and his daughter (what a sweetie) who were travelling up the coast for a mini-vacation. Our wonderful guide and instructor was the former Castine town manager, Joe Slocum, who regaled up with great stories of the area. One story about a submerged moose was particularly amusing.
I was fairly confident about kayaking since we have our own set of Loons here and I use them often but this was my first time in a real more streamlined ocean kayak . I freaked myself out upon hearing the lecture on how to get out of the kayak should it roll (pretty simple really) ... so for the first half hour I wasn't about to rock that boat and consequently was pretty stiff on the way out.
I soon got over that though and became comfortable..... and more comfortable about kayaking in the almost pitch dark by the time we cleared the harbor.
It was beautiful and peaceful out there and we found the dazzling light show promised in a little inlet just past harbor. Fascinating and mesmerizing!
I think the thing that is best about kayaking at night is that sense of exhiliration...the hint of danger and possibility and the sense that you might be on some sort of "secret mission" slipping quietly through the water. OK..so I've been reading too many spy novels...but it was truly an adventure. One of the other kayak trips that Joe mentioned was a night kayak ...stargazing. He told us about kayaking on a still night with the stars and meteors reflected in the still waters. I'm hooked now with the idea of night kayaking and the next full moon I'll be out! I'm sorry not to have pictures of Castine but it was night. It is a lovely village and I hear the general store was voted best Lobster Roll last year......

It was just Pete and me and Joe, our guide.
They are called dino-flagellates...tiny creatures that glow when disturbed. It looks a lot like fireflies in the water.

I need to come for a visit with Kris. I'm jealous of our friend Pam who will be visiting. Gosh...Pam has been to both our houses now!
A couple of weeks ago when my son was visiting from Chicago...we all went out on our deck and just watched the stars and meteors...all lying down on the deck! It was grand fun and felt like we were all kids. That's a nice feeling to have with one's grown children!

amazing! did you ever try to really digitalize your letterings? with fonbtographer or so? it's really fun. i've been working with it for a semester at university. you can really start to fall in love with details.
