Carrabassett/Kennebec Trip

We recently trekked north to Carrabassett Valley, Sugarloaf ski resort and Solon, Maine for a lovely long weekend of outdoor activities which included: hiking, golfing, moose watching, and a lot of contemplation on kayaking. The colors were spectacular and near peak. The further we travelled north the sparser the foliage. Jackman was pretty thin save the lingering oaks. I have to say ...the Oak is remarkably overlooked in foliage season. While the various maples steal the show, the oaks serve as a rich backdrop with the deep russets, wines and earthy variety of browns and ochres.
The above picture is looking down on the Carrabassett Valley from a ridgeline just north of Stratton . We stayed in Stratton at the White Wolf Inn. Well worth a visit if you are up there around supper! I can just imagine, after a day on the slopes of Sugarloaf, winding down with a hearty yet gourmet quality meal here. The desserts (particularly the maple creme caramel!) are outstanding! www.thewhitewolfinn.com Posted by Picasa

I'll bet it was pretty down there. Coming into peak. We are past here now...the oaks still have some leaves.
A huge storm is coming in tomorrow that will no doubt take care of the remaining "hangers on"
